Midwives have been a core base for reliable and responsible women's healthcare for centuries. However, in our modern culture many have misunderstood our mission and practice.
New Jersey CNMs have had prescriptive authority since 1993. Third-party reimbursement for CNMs is mandated in New Jersey. In 2002 New Jersey CNMs attended approximately 6.8% of the total births in New Jersey for that year, and the number of births attended by CNMs and the number of CNMs in New Jersey has been increasing each year since then.
Current research on midwifery continues to show that CNMs are effective, cost-efficient women's health care providers. Locally, CNMs in New Jersey have been credited with lowering cesarean section birth rates while providing quality, satisfying care.
